Using real-time data for energy efficiency

CASE STUDY

Energy Company Case Study

One of the largest electricity providers in the world hired us to help upgrade their data management system.

Utility companies need to have the capabilities to predict power generation and grid loads, and this client wanted the ability to understand and forecast energy loads every hour, anytime, irrespective of conditions.

Real-time data would help optimise everything from energy efficiency to operational issues.

  • The client’s current data management process wasn’t fit for purpose, using basic programmes that were unsuitable for such a huge task.

On top of that, the company highlighted data integrity as a main focus of concern. Human error, data tampering and interpretation bias all added to an underlying issue that required attention.

Any solution moving forward would require traceability, overall history recording and formulas alignment across different units.

And of course, having all this run in real-time was the biggest challenge.

  • The first thing we did was talk to the stakeholders and listen to what they had to say. Interviews with senior management figures and technicians allowed us to hear any concerns before we started.

Next we organised a comprehensive data history reconstruction, collecting dispersed and scattered data records from all areas of the organisation. We also unified the calculation process, ensuring the company would have seamless access to all history from a single source.

This tied in with the data centre we built at the company’s headquarters. This dedicated hub would gather real-time data from all units and generate a single version of the truth.

To tie it all up we created an actionable visualisation tool that provided the company with the ability to securely access data, customize configurations and create dashboards on demand.

  • The result was a state-of-the-art data management centre that provided historical and real-time data and information from all operating areas.

We ensured that the new system was fully integrated with the company’s operational workflows, as well as having advanced security and stability.

Data was leveraged to automatically trigger specific responses without the risk of human error, so if an unusual pattern was detected, it would be flagged immediately by the system.

And of course, the system allowed for real-time grid monitoring, permitting the client to measure, assess and even predict all aspects of governance.

Now backed by the latest data communication, visualisation and algorithmic technologies, the company improved in all aspects across its entire scope of operations.

“Once we met the team and saw the skillset they could bring we had confidence that we were going to get exactly what we needed. Tech People delivered us more than just data management system, but a whole new approach to business intelligence and decision-making.”
